WFA 50+ National Cup Round 2
Peter Paine Performance Centre, Boston
July 6th, 2019
The second round of the WFA National Cup saw Stamford’s 50+ side travel to Boston. The Strollers were able to field a strong squad for the fixture, with Stamford being represented by Cameron Brownlie, William Barrett, Pat Botley, Paul Kirby, Gary Wildsmith, Tim Marsden and Stephen Gates, however Boston were still able to come out on top, 6 goals to 3. Although Boston were deserved winners, the score line didn’t tell the whole story, with the Strollers hitting the post twice and Boston having a game plan better suited to the small pitch.
Stamford started slowly, with Boston going two goals ahead early on and it quickly became clear that such shots from distance were going to be the order of the day. Stamford were able to pull a goal back through a Paul Kirby shot from a free kick, but ended the half 4 goals to 1 down. Stamford became more accustomed to the pitch size in the second half and kept Boston to their 4 goals for most of that period, with a well worked, if not slightly fortunate goal from Gary Wildsmith. However, Boston’s were able to score a further 2 goals later in that half, followed by a consolation goal for the Strollers, taking Paul Kirby’s tally to 2 for the game.
Congratulations to Boston and good luck in the next round.
