Stamford went into their 1st match of MD4 of the inaugural league against 2nd placed Bramcote, who started the day 6 points behind us with 4 games left to be playedand without leading scorer Gerry Monaghan. Bramcote were also under strength and Stamford soon took control. Graham Curry opened the scoring midway through the half giving Stamford a 1-0 half time lead. In the second half Will Barrett bagged a brace to help give Stamford a comfortable 3-0 win.
The 2nd match was against Alfreton. Stamford needed just a point to clinch the League. Again Stamford played good possession and attacking football and Frank Smith opened the scoring midway through the first half.1-0 at halftime. In the 2nd half Stamford controlled the game looking after the ball to see the game out as 1-0 winners.
So the AshaHealthcare Midlands Over 65s League has new champions in Stamford Strollers! With one matchday still to play this reflects the dominance the squad enjoyed this season.
Another really good all round team performance with the 100% winning record maintained. Bill Whittle has now kept 7 clean sheets in 8 games but he will be the first to say how the side defend from the front and have given our opponents very few scoring opportunities.
The squad today was:
John Hutchins (capt)
Bill Whittle
Bob Wood
Graham Curry
Will Barrett
Frank Smith
Chris Keirl
Well done everyone!
