Rushden Tournament 50+
July 14th, 2019
Report from Steve Gates
A good result for Stamford Strollers, ending the day unbeaten and tournament winners to boot.
The Strollers were ably represented by Trevor Oliver, William Barrett, Greg Pogonowski, Colin Barrett-Treen, Gary Wildsmith, Andy Barnard, Stuart James, Tim Marsden, Stephen Gates and Scott Sawers, but unfortunately there were only 5 teams in our group instead of the promised 7, so game time was reduced accordingly.
Stamford played the following group games:
Vs Wisbech, won 1-0, goal from Scott.
Vs Huntingdon, won 2-1, goals from Gary (2). Trevor made some great saves during the day, but certainly kept Stamford in this particular game.
Vs Moulton, drew 0-0.
Vs Rushden, won 5-0, goals from Scott (2), Steve, Colin and Tim.
These results saw Stamford top the group, seeing them through to the semis.
Semi final, vs Kettering, won 2-1, goals from Gary and Scott, with Kettering probably the best side we played all day.
Final, vs Wisbech, won 2-1, goals from Gary and on his debut, Andy managed to get the winner.
Thanks to the full squad, who all fully contributed in this participative event. Stamford never really looked in difficulty at any time during the day, even when we went a goal down in the final and that is testament to the strength of the squad.
Thanks also to Rushden & Diamonds for a well organised tournament, managing the dropping out of teams (3 in total) well.
