PDFL Matchday 5 Reports

Division 1 A Team Report

Strollers A were schedulef to play two fixtures in Division 1, but due to Sleaford being unable to send a team they played just one match against our friends, and often bogey team, Netherton A.

Strollers got off to a good start taking the lead only to let this slip with an equaliser from Netherton shortly after. Strollers again led and again conceded, a pattern that followed to the end of the match when the scores stood at 3-3.

Historically speaking this was a good result given our tendancy to concede to Netherton.

The result leaves Stamford Strollers clear at the top of the table by one point, but awaiting the outcome of the no show fixture by Sleaford.

Whatever the result of the aborted fixture against Sleaford, an exciting finish to this years Division 1 beckons.

Strollers clutch of excellent goals came from Nick Hunter, Paul Blakemore and Nigel Reeve.

In the final analysis it was perhaps a somewhat disappointing day for everyone who made the journey to Peterborough on what was a freezing cold morning, to play only 20 or so minutes of walking football, for some even less.

Nevertheless, the result in the Netherton game, plus the awaited decision on the Sleaford “no show” will hopefully keep Strollers A in prime position to continue their challenge for this seasons title.

The squad for the day was:

  • Lee Takacs (GK)

  • Paul Blakemore

  • Nigel Reeve

  • Lee Tillen

  • Nick Hunter

  • Iain Ross

Division 2 B Team Report

Match day 5 saw the the kick off to the second half of the season.

The Strollers B team were currently in fourth place and had 3 games to look forward to. The squad for MD5 was:

  • Stuart Gardner GK

  • Les Woods

  • Paul Archer

  • Mike Edwards

  • Colin Barrett-Treen

  • Tim Marsden

First up for Strollers B was Huntingdon’s strongest team who had beaten the Bs 4 – 3 earlier in the season. The first half saw Strollers make a confident start and following a foul just outside the Huntingdon area Colin Barrett – Treen set the ball back perfectly for Tim Marsden to pass the ball firmly into the corner of the net.

The Bs controlled the remainder of the first half to go in 1 – 0 up. Second half Huntingdon pounced on a loose pass to equalise, and within a couple of minutes had turned the tables to go 2 – 1 up, things could have been worse but for a great save from Stuart Gardner in the Bs goal.

Undeterred Strollers bounced back with 2 well taken goals from Les Woods and Barrett – Treen to go into the lead 3 – 2, only for Huntingdon to equalise in the last minute to make the final score 3 – 3.

Next up for the Bs was Oakham who had beaten the Strollers 4 – 2 in the reverse fixture match day 1.

This time around though the Bs were too strong for Oakham and swept into a 3 goal lead through Mike Edwards, Paul Archer and Woods. Oakham pulled a goal back but Strollers held on comfortably to claim a 3 – 1 win and all 3 points.

Last game of the day for Strollers was against Glinton and Northborough who Strollers had beaten 2 – 1 earlier in the season. In a fairly even first half the difference between the 2 sides was a flukey own goal following a corner which put G&N 1 – 0 up. Second half the Bs pushed for an equaliser, but were caught on the break and G&N ran out 2 – 0 winners.

So with 6 games to play Strollers remain in fourth place 6 points behind leaders G&N.
