Midlands ASHA 65+ League Matchday 3

Taff Lovesey

Strollers 65+ were lined up to face two teams riding high in the league this season, Matlock and Ingles.

Squad:

  • Peter Oppenheimer (gk)

  • Taff Lovesey (capt)

  • Dave Forth

  • Paul Humphries

  • John Phythian

  • Phil Hall

  • Jez Norris

Matlock 0:0 Strollers

In a very tight game Strollers just edged the possession but could not put the finish on the chances created. Jez Norris was playing well and holding up the ball up front, laying it off for multiple strikes at goal. One of these moves saw Norris and Taff Lovesey link up well, only for the skipper to drag his shot wide of the left post when 1 on 1 with the keeper. A couple of players on the Matlock squad clearly do not understand the ethos, or rules of walking football, and were very aggressive and an altercation following a heavy tackle from behind on Lovesey led to a Matlock player karate chopping/ forearming Lovesey across the throat. This resulted in both players receiving blue cards (the referee later admitted he had not seen the strike to the throat as this would've been a straight red card offence). After this incident the game became disjointed but neither team were able to find the back of the net with Dave Forth and Peter Oppenheimer soaking up any chances created by our opponents.

Ingles 0:0 Strollers

By complete contrast to the previous game, this match was played in excellent spirit and friendly competitiveness. Both teams fought hard for the points and created chances but the Strollers were wayward in their shooting today and most shots went high. The closest we came to scoring was when Paul Humphries played in Lovesey whose shot flicked off the foot of Dave Guest and rebounded back out off the underside of the bar and when a good move saw Phil Hall slide the ball to Norris whose well hit shot was well saved by the keeper.

Oppenheimer was called upon a few times in the second half and did well to keep the teams level.
