The Strollers Over 60s A squad for match day 1 of the new season at Roses Sports Gainsborough was:
T Fisher
C Keirl
D Kelby
T Lovesey
F Smith
S Bones
T Marsden
As 6 ‘regular’ A team players from last season had either moved on or were unavailable due to injury, work or holiday commitments the A team squad for MD1 had a new look to it.
Tony Fisher once again played in goal in the absence of Bill Whittle who has had to retire with injury. England Over 70 international Dave Kelby came into the squad to play in midfield with Frank Smith, promoted from the B team and Welsh international Taff Lovesey who returned to A team action following a long term injury. New signing Steve Bones started up front in the absence of Steve Adcock who has moved on to play closer to home. Chris Keirl and Tim Marsden remained as the only 2 survivors of the squad that won the Midlands Cup and the Lincs League and Cup double the previous season.
Results:
Match 1 Lincoln Invictus 2 Stamford Strollers A 1 (Bones)
Match 2 Grimsby Corinthians 2 Stamford Strollers A 1 (Lovesey)
Match 3 Boston Utd 3 Stamford Strollers 1 (Lovesey)
Bearing in mind the A team had lost only 5 games in the previous 40 it was disappointing to lose all three games. However, all the games had been tight affairs and there were more positive than negative signs with Steve Bones scoring on his debut, 2 goals from Taff Lovesey and some good attacking football being played.
