With a tough three match fixture schedule against the top three teams this month, our ladies continued to show the steady improvements in their game as they ran all three of those teams close and their play deserved more than the 1 point that they came away with.
First up were Grimsby, 3rd place in the league. Our Strollers started well and got the goal their early play deserved when Judith Jagger won the ball back, played a through ball to Merryn Kelby who slotted it home. Our ladies nearly added to the lead when a shot from Ness Hardy slipped inches wide of the post. Grimsby then pulled it back square with a well-worked free kick. As the game progressed, Merryn fed Jan Richardson in for a shot but the keeper saved it well.
FT: Strollers 1 Grimsby 1
Next up were 100% table-toppers Collingham, who fielded a number of international players. Our ladies stood defiant and battled throughout but found themselves slowly falling back as the league leaders moved into a three-goal lead. Heads did not drop though, and when Vicki France found Kelby with a pass, she eased it on to Cath Thirsk for a first-time finish to pull one back.
FT: Strollers 1 Collingham 3
The fixture list threw up Cleethorpes for our third game, sat in 2nd place in the league.
In a game that could've gone either way, our ladies showed their battling spirit once again. Early in the half, Julie Marsh played Kelby in only for the keeper to make a great save. Cleethorpes opened the scoring a short while later but when France found Kelby once more, Kelby showed great skill beating the defender and finishing with a left-foot shot. 1-1
Cleethorpes came back hard and opened up a two-goal lead to make it 1-3, but our ladies bounced back once again. Jagger finished well after being fed by Hardy. There was still time for Kelby to create a chance to equalize, but her shot went just past the upright.
