Stamford Strollers squad for Match day 3 was:
Bill Whittle GK
Chris Keirl
Paul Beard
John Hutchins
Lee Tillen
Bill Heath
Tim Marsden Cap
Stamford’s first match of the day was against current table toppers Boston captained by England International Steve Slater. Unfortunately Strollers own England player Steve Adcock was unavailable. The first half was a very cagey affair with defences on top and both goalkeepers largely untroubled, half time 0-0. Second half Stamford had more possession than their opponents and were able to exert significant pressure on the Boston defence. As a result of the growing pressure Boston conceded a free kick just outside their area. Paul Beard set the ball back perfectly for Tim Marsden to pass the ball firmly into the corner of the Boston net 1-0. With the clock running down Strollers were able to confidently see out the remainder of the game to record a clean sheet and a narrow victory.
Stamford’s second match of the day was against local rivals Oakham. In contrast to our first match this was a more end to end affair. Bill Whittle was in fine form to deny Oakham on a number of occasions before he was eventually beaten by a well struck shot that went in off the post. Half time 1-0 to Oakham. Second half Strollers pushed forward in search of an equaliser only to be caught on the break, by another quality strike, 2-0. Undeterred Stamford forced their way back into the game, Paul Beard finishing emphatically from close range to make it 2-1. However, that was as good as it got and Oakham held on to take all the points. Two solid performances from everybody in the squad.
